Kansas City – March 25, 2011 – Ken-A-Vision, a leading manufacturer of digital presentation solutions, document cameras, microscopes and applications software to the educational market, today announced Mary Coogan, science teacher at Liberty North High School in Liberty, Missouri, as the recipient of the 2011 Sister Martina Rockers Excellence in Teaching Award. Coogan, the eighth recipient of the annual award, will receive a plaque and $1,000 at the Awards Ceremony of the Greater Kansas City Science and Engineering Fair on March 26.

The Sister Martina Rockers Excellence in Teaching Award, sponsored by Ken-A-Vision and selected by Science Pioneers, recognizes 9-12 grade teachers who have taught science, mathematics, or technology in the same school or system for at least 20 years and who have maintained a standard of excellence within and outside the classroom.

In her 25-year career in science education, Coogan has devoted herself to providing a quality science education for high school students. For the past 11 years, Coogan has brought that devotion to Liberty Public Schools teaching various levels of chemistry and biology. At Liberty High School, she established one of the most competitive science programs in the Kansas City Metro area preparing her students for events such as Chemathon at Missouri Western State University and the Regional Science Knowledge Bowl at Rockhurst University. Coogan coached her teams to three consecutive successful appearances at the National Science Bowl in Washington, DC, and in 2007 won the Civility Award for sportsmanship.

“Mary Coogan’s commitment to task is what elevates her as an outstanding educator,” said Rosemary Camp, Science Department Chair at Liberty High School. “Rather than describing herself as a science teacher, Mary is quick to say that she teaches high school students about science, keeping the focus on her students, not herself. She differentiates her lessons, so that all students can attain success.”

According to Camp, “Recognizing that Mary must also stay current in scientific literature and educational best practices, she is an active member of the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) and Science Teachers of Missouri (STOM) and has presented at numerous conferences for these organizations.”

Steve Dunn, President of Ken-A-Vision added, “We at Ken-A-Vision are honored to announce Mary Coogan as a worthy recipient of the Sister Martina Rockers Excellence in Teaching Award. From being a former Liberty student to being the only faculty member selected to speak at the dedication ceremony for the opening of Liberty North High School in 2010, demonstrates Mary’s commitment to the education of her students.”

The annual award was started in 2003 by Tom Dunn, former President of Ken-A-Vision, to honor Sister Martina Rockers of Bishop Miege High School in Roeland Park, Kansas for her teaching excellence. Sister Martina is currently in her 58th year of teaching.

Kansas City – March 30, 2010 – Ken-A-Vision, a leading manufacturer of digital presentation solutions, document cameras, microscopes and applications software to the educational market, today announced Randy Dix, science teacher at Olathe North High School in Olathe, Kansas, as the recipient of the 2010 Sister Martina Rockers Excellence in Teaching Award. Dix, the seventh recipient of the annual award, was presented a plaque and $1,000 at the Awards Ceremony of the Greater Kansas City Science and Engineering Fair on March 27.

In his 33-year career in science education, of which 26 years have been at Olathe North High School, Dix’s goal has been to help his students to become scientifically literate citizens. Dix believes that biological or scientific literacy provides students with an understanding of science required for personal decision making and responsible citizenship. Dix developed and facilitated a successful district-wide program to interest his students in pursuing professions in Biotechnoloy
and Life Sciences, high-profile and exploding fields in the Kansas City metropolitan area. The program combines rigorous math and science classes with the opportunity to job shadow science professionals.

Dix has been instrumental in promoting digital technology in the classroom as shown in his participation in the three-year pilot of Prentice Hall’s “Exploring Life” biology text, a study using printed text supported by interactive web sites. Another example, his current biotechnology class is one of few classes in the U.S. working remotely with the Milwaukee School of Engineering to model proteins.

“This award is for the teaching professional who consistently demonstrates creativity and technological innovation while engaging students in the subject matter” said Steve Dunn, President of Ken-A-Vision. “Randy Dix is an outstanding, dedicated instructor who has exemplified these characteristics.”

The annual award was started in 2003 by Tom Dunn, former President of Ken-A-Vision, to honor Sister Martina Rockers of Bishop Miege High School in Roeland Park, Kansas for her teaching excellence. She is currently in her 57th year of teaching.

The Ed Tech ARRA is also designed to ensure that every student is technologically literate by the end of eighth grade and to encourage the effective integration of technology with teacher training and curriculum development to establish successful research-based instructional methods.

The kena give-away program was first announced October 21 on the NSTA Web site’s Elementary School E-mail List Server. Within hours, 450 responses representing 44 states and schools ranging from Elementary Schools, University Elementary Education Departments to American International Schools in London and Montenegro were received. Delivery of the product has been completed.

“Our goal is to deliver affordable, innovative solutions that bring digital microscopy into the classroom,” said Steve Dunn, Ken-A-Vision’s President. “In these challenging economic times, we wanted to give back to educators and provide them the tools to excite students and promote science and technology. In August, we were thrilled and honored to receive a prestigious award for the kena, the 2009 International Design Excellence Bronze Award (IDEA).”

Kena has 2x, 4x and 10x objectives giving total magnification from 20x, 40x, to 100x and cool, bright LED lighting on top and bottom for viewing of specimens or slides.
